The Parents Music Resource Center and Music Today free essay sample

In society music Is an extremely Important form of art. It Is one of the most sincere forms of expression. Music can influence people from many different backgrounds and cultures. Musicians have the same freedom of speech rights as any other United States citizen. In the mid sasss rock musicians rights were challenged with issues including censorship and first amendment guarantees. The MARC (or Parents Music Resource Center) was a committee formed in 1985 by the wives of several congressmen. They Included Tipper Gore, Susan Baker, wife of Treasury Secretary James Baker, and Nancy Drummond, wife of Senator StormDrummond. Their mission was to educate parents about alarming trends in popular music (Encyclopedia, 11/22/04. ) Out of all the many styles of music in this particular case only rock music is mentioned. Society is always impacted by music. At the time, rock music was the most popular. This caused the affects to be much stronger. That is also why the MARC directed the most attention toward rock, rather than country, hip-hop, blues, or dance music. The MARC easily became a national movement. All of the women involved had connections to the government, which gave them an added power and access to aka the group national. On or about May 31, 1985, the MARC sent a letter to Stanley Gorton, then president of the Recording Industry Association of America (ARIA), accusing the record Industry of exposing the youth of America, to sex, violence, and the glorification of drugs and alcohol .. . The letter went on to demand a rating system for rock records similar to the MAMA rating system for films (Kappa, 1989. ) Frank Kappa was one of the first musicians to speak against the MARC. He began by writing a letter to the music industry. His letter expressed his thoughts and feelings toward the whole situation.Within this open letter Kappa states, A record company has the right to conduct Its business and make a profit, but not at the expense of the people who make the product businesspeople still has to write and perform the music (Kappa,1989. ) Unfortunately, the letter did not make much of an impact. Kappa, then decided to take the issue a step further and wrote a letter to the president. The letter he wrote influenced a speech President Reagan gave on the situation. Which, later lead to public court hearings discussing the issues the MARC raised. The Senate Hearing on record labeling, held on September 19, 1985, was arguably he best attended and media-covered hearing ever held before any Senate Committee (Defile,1993. ) The ARIA and individual record companies wanted the situations to be dealt with as quickly as possible. They did not want to cause a lot of trouble. There were many musicians involved within the trial process. Some of the most famous witnesses were Frank Kappa, Dee Snider, John Denver, and Jell Bavaria. During the hearing, there was a focus on fifteen different songs. The songs on the list Lapper, Madonna, Deaf Leopard, and Twisted Sister (Encyclopedia, 11/22/04. ) Frank Kappa, was an interesting witness. His lyrics were never questioned. None of the artists who made it onto the list which became know as The Marcs Filthy Fifteen had anything in their lyrics even close to the stuff in my catalog, and yet, for some reason, was never accused of being a Violator' (Kappa,1989. ) The First Amendment of the Constitution gives citizens the freedoms of religion, press, assembly, petition, and most important to the MARC hearings, speech. Obscenity is not protected by the amendment and that is where a lot of controversy Nas caused. The line between what is obscene and what isnt obscene is hard to determine. Many proposals were made throughout the hearing, after all the debates, Ententes, and testimonials the case was finally settled. Even before the trial was complete the MARC and ARIA had made a compromise. Following the Hearing, on November 1 of 1985, the MARC, and its ally the National Parents and Teachers Association, reached an agreement with the ARIA on the voluntary record label. The agreement stipulated that the printing of lyrics remained optional and, because of space limitations, cassettes were exempted, bearing only the imprint see LAP for lyrics. Since then, different record companies designed their own label containing the words Parental Guidance Explicit Lyrics or some variation thereof (Defile, 1993. ) Many record stores refused to sell albums containing the label (most notably Wall-Mart) and others limited the sale of those albums to minors. The label became known as the Tipper sticker. Some politicians attempted to criminality the sale of explicit records to minors, and others went so far as to try to ban such records (Encyclopedia,11/22/04. ) The activities of the MARC and the record industrys response on the issue since then are not very clear. Some, usually smaller, companies have continued to refuse putting labels on records, and generally the response on the part of the musicians was not favorable, feeling that the ARIA had sold teethe sales of records, however, do not seem to have been affected (Defile, 1993. ) Today it is common to see advisory stickers on CDC.However, they are not required, but suggested. There are no major consequences currently for not having labels on music. Now the MARC has moved into the world of video, complaining about television, home video and MET (Kappa,1989. ) Currently there are not many mainstream organizations that have intentions like the MARC. Most of the groups that permute censorship are a much smaller scale. It is not likely for them to gain any national status. These groups are unlikely to gain following because many musicians today make different versions of their record. These records come in a clean erosion with less obscenities and the regular version, including all obscenities. This is logical on behalf of the musicians. It is a large step forward in preventing anything like the MARC happening again. Also, the different versions of records please the people who would be against obscenity. The music industrys self-regulation of lyrics through parental warning labels is drawing a not-so-fine line between black and white, an expert on music censorship says (Adelaide,11123/04. According to this source, in some situations todays music is being used to label more than content. Most of todays CDC that carry the Parental Advisory label are from African- American rap and hip-hop artists (Adelaide, 11/23/04. ) Not only does the as the causes of destructive behaviors. There are many indications of the destructive behaviors caused by music. During the 1999 Columbine High School attacks, the music the students listened to was looked into, as a possible reason why their actions Nerve so violent. Also, in 1999 the pop-punk band Blink 182 released a song called Dams Song. On May 4, Columbine High School student Greg Barnes took his own life at his house Dams Song was set to repeat on the CD player when the student Nas found hanged. The band sympathizes with the loss, but singer/bassist Mark Hoops told LAUNCH (the interview source) that people need to sit down and listen to the lyrics to get the inherently positive message in the song. Any intelligent person that listens to that song will know that its an anti-suicide song, and so if you listen to the lyrics its pretty self-explanatory that its about going through a hard time and finding the strength to go on, he said. It was a very unfortunate thing that happened and our heart goes out to the kids fam ily, but the song itself. . . I think the message is pretty clear actually(Rosen, 11/23/04. ) Music is constantly interpreted and misinterpreted. It is up to an individual, or parent in a childs case to pick out hat kind of music they want to listen to. Another responsibility of the consumer is to recognize the difference between artist intent and how one perceives the meaning of song. People tend to be afraid to take responsibility for their own actions, so they go ahead and blame others. Musicians and other celebrities are an easy target. In regards to suicides being blamed on music, that is an unfair statement to make. The artists should not be faulted for another persons decision. Suicide is a bigger issue Nothing itself. Although it may make sense to blame an outside source, suicide should be looked at in a much larger spectrum. History of all kinds is important. It tells the stories of how countries and societies came to be. Music is probably one of the largest reflections of society.Music can express how an individual or groups of people feel about a certain topic. Through the tempo and melody of a song emotions can be described. Lyrics are written about love, hate, politics, friendship, life, death, money, sex, and society. There is not a subject in the world that music has not addressed. Although the sole purpose of music is to entertain, there is no doubt that t does a lot more than that. Music captivates people, it makes people aware of issues present in the world, music inspires people to say what they think, and music teaches many lessons. The MARC case is a big deal in music history. It was a change of an era. In the sasss and the sasss most people were not concerned with the possibility of negative effects in their music. In the sasss that concept changed. The MARC became a large scandal between the musicians expressing their opinions and the conservative adults who wanted to protect children from the negative actions that music could lead them to take part in. The MARC court hearings showed people expressing their thoughts in a powerful way.Without this taking place who knows Inhere music would be today. Frank Kappa, Tipper Gore and all the other people involved within the MARC case made a difference in the music world. The compromise the MARC and the ARIA made was quite simple, but well though out. Complete censorship is unfair and illegal, but warning the consumer about the material is fair and understandable. Although it does not matter who won the case, all that matters is that they were involved. These are the people that shaped how the always under consideration.

Problem of Racial Slurs in Australia

Aims The study is aimed at researching the problem of racial slurs directed at indigenous Australians. There is no secret that ethnic conflicts and the lack of tolerance that they are triggered by occurs even in the modern democratic society.Advertising We will write a custom proposal sample on Problem of Racial Slurs in Australia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More According to the latest statistical data regarding the social conflicts in Australia, the issue of racial discrimination is getting increasingly significant as the lack of tolerance is growing out of proportions: â€Å"As many as one in five admit they would discriminate when sitting near an Indigenous Australian, or in a retail environment† (Discrimination against Indigenous Australians: A snapshot of the views of non-Indigenous people aged 25–44, 2014, p. 2). The goals of the study are to identify the key racial slurs used for addressing indigenous Austral ians and to evaluate the changes in people’s attitudes towards the racial slurs in question (e. g, the transfer of a neutral term into the category of taboo words, a once pejorative word being turned into a neural one, the obsolescence of certain pejorative words for defining indigenous Australians, the emergence of new insults, etc.) Background of the Community The community in question is located in Melbourne and consists of approximately 11,750 people. 20 Australians aged 20–40 years old have been selected from this community for participation in the research and the identification of the key challenges, which the native residents of the area have to deal with on a regular basis when communicating with the non-native denizens of the local population. It should be noted that the community in question has a comparatively old history; it was founded in 1850s and has been evolving ever since. The community can be considered quite diverse, much like the city of Melbourne in general; being a part of the capital, it represents a range of nationalities and ethnic groups, including not only indigenous Australians, but also a range of people belonging to other nationalities and ethnicities. Historically, the local denizens can be split into two key groups, i.e., the native residents and the descendants of the European immigrants.Advertising Looking for proposal on linguistics? While the community under analysis can be considered as rather diverse, the conflicts between the native and non-native citizens have increased in number (Islam Jaai, 2013, p. 54). As a result, the use of a range of obscenities directed at the origin of the local dwellers has also b een enhanced. Literature Review Though not being know as infamously wide as the racial profiling of the African Americans and other ethnicities living in the United States and Europe, the issue of discrimination towards the native residents of Australia also deserves the attention of researchers as a rather cruel subjugation of the local culture. The use of the slurs, which are addressed to the native residents of Australia, seems to have gone through major changes. While admittedly retaining their offensive context, the racial slurs, which are directed at the Australian population, seem to have become geared towards the application of the words that have an intrinsically diminishing connotation in the English language, i.e., are characterized by emotional coloring, rather than the use of the elements of the Australian culture alone. The specified issue can be viewed from the tenets of both the theory of linguistics and the existing social theories. In fact, the impact of the social factors on the evolution of the pejorative terms, which the residents of Australia use in order to insult the indigenous inhabitants of the state, is evident; the significance thereof can be traced easily in the derogatory terms, which are used as a racial slur nowadays.Advertising We will write a custom proposal sample on Problem of Racial Slurs in Australia specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In fact, the amount of the social issues, which the obscenities in question are directed onto, have altered significantly; for instance, the gender issue seems to have gained new and much greater significance in the relationships between the native Australians and the local residents. A closer look at the existing racial slurs used in order to offend the Australian people shows that, in addition to ridiculing various elements of the Australian culture, the members of the Australian communities also seem to be engaging into the word building process, which presupposes using the English words as the basis for creating diminishing titles for the native Australians. While the idea of addressing the origin of the indigenous Australian people still constitutes a major part of the racial slurs directed at the population in question (e.g., the words such as â€Å"abo† meaning aboriginal exist), there is a very strong tendency towards creating new words (Australian aboriginals, 2015, para. 2). As far as the type of word building used in the course of creating new racial slurs is concerned, the techniques known as compounding (Javen, Juad Nazli 2012) and blending can be identified. The specified type of words formation, in fact, correlates with the present-day evolution of the so-called computer language, i.e., the incorporation into the traditional language of the elements of information technology (Liu Liu, 2014, p. 23). The given type of neologisms creation can be considered not as threatening to the native denizens of the Australian population, as these neologisms seem to have a rather quick staying power and will most likely be washed away by the sands of time within a couple of years, if not months (Liu Liu, 2014, p. 24). The lack of the above-mentioned staying power of the words in question can be explained by the fact that they are rarely linked strongly to the specifics of the native Australians’ culture and are in most cases inspired by a fad.Advertising Looking for proposal on linguistics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Seeing that the latter vanishes rather quickly and leaves very little impact on either the people insulting the target audience, or the ones, whom the insult is directed at, the specified racial slurs can hardly be viewed as a consistent threat to the wellbeing of the representatives of Australia (Liu Liu, 2014, p. 25). The former type of racial slur, though having clearly aged, still can be viewed as the most offensive one for the native denizens of the Australian continent. There are several reasons for the specified effect to occur; first and most obvious, the former type of slur is rooted deeply in the Australian culture and, therefore, attacks it by mocking it. As a result, the sensitivity of the people, whom it addresses, peaks, and the offence takes its toll on the indigenous population of the Australian people. Second, the offensive concepts in question have a very long history and, therefore, are packed with the semes, which the new ones do not yet possess. More importantl y, the issue concerning the evolution of racial slurs directed at the native Australians has gained additional significance over the past few years due to the tension in the relationships between the indigenous residents of Australia and the descendants of the colonists, who consider the natives a potential threat to the further evolution of the culture and the acceptance of new cultural influences (Liu Liu, 2014, p. 29). Another look at the amount of the racially insensitive verbal attacks, which the Australian population subjects the native residents of the continent to, will reveal that the use of metonymy has become increasingly important in designing racial slurs. Seeing that Australia is characterized by a range of unique features, which are attributed to its nature, including both flora and fauna, there has been an obvious tendency towards using the elements of the Australian culture as the tools for abusing the denizens of the local population and, therefore, disparaging th e people that belong to the Australian culture. A single glance at the specifics of the semantic components of the racially insensitive words used previously will show that they were aimed at ridiculing the Australian culture in the first place (Liu Liu, 2014, p. 27). The present-day racial slurs, however, seem to have been updated in accordance with the changes in the relationships between the local residents and the people belonging to different cultures. Specifically, the tendency to incorporate more general words at the root of the new racial slurs seems to have become dominant in the relationships between the native Australians and the representatives of other cultures. For instance the words such as â€Å"chromer† or â€Å"goggles† (,Australian aboriginals, 2015, para. 8, para 14) do not seem to have anything to do with the Australian culture in particular; instead, they clearly represent a metonymic transfer of certain semes onto the representatives of the indi genous Australian culture. In fact, the types of word formation, which is used as the basis for developing racial slurs aimed at the native Australian population, have also been altered significantly, with the key emphasis having been shifted onto the concept of blending (Liu Liu, 2014, p. 23). The evolution, which the racially insensitive elements of the Australian English language have undergone, therefore, displays the tendency for the racial slurs to become less culture oriented and more superficial. Seeing that metonymy has become the defining driving force behind the creation of new racial slurs in Australia, the tendency for the use of the elements of the elements of the local culture seems to subside, leaving more room for the use of the features that stress the key features of the local people’s character; as a result, there is an obvious leaning towards the use of English words as opposed to the Australian ones. For example, the highly offensive term â€Å"queue w armer† (Australian aboriginals, 2015, para. 8, para 23) signifies an obvious shift towards the incorporation of the English words and the elements of the English reality into the context of the Australian culture. Theoretical Positioning The issues of intercultural relationships and the lack of tolerance have been discussed by a range of theorists from a variety of viewpoints. However, when it comes to identifying the key reasons for the change in the vocabulary, which is used primarily for establishing complicated social relationships with another racial or ethnic group, the incorporation of a linguistic and a social theory into the analysis must be considered. Therefore, the subject matter will be viewed from the tenets of both the conflict theory and the objectivist theory of semantic change, which is also known as the truth-conditional theory (Wulf, 2013, p. 97). Indeed, according to the latter theoretical premise, the changes, which the negative epithets used for denoting native Australians have suffered, can be explained as the evolution of the Australian vocabulary and the attempt of the representatives of the Australian culture to incorporate new meanings into the words that are traditionally used in an everyday setting by conducting a metaphorical and metonymic transfer of a specific quality or a set of qualities from the object in question to the native Australians living in the community. Thus, the definition of the semantic components, which allow Australian people to refer to the native residents of the community in a specific manner, will be carried out, and the principles, which the pejorativization of the words in question occurs, will become possible under the specified theoretical premises. The analysis of the qualities, which are associated with specific words and, therefore, are attributed to the indigenous Australian people, can be carried out with the help of the theory in question. As Hollman explains, the theory works as the tool for isolating the properties of certain denominators and, thus, for specifying the differences between specific groups of words: If we describe the differences in meaning between the words man, woman, boy and girl in terms of the properties [+/- male] and [+/- adult], we can take a human being, and use those properties (often called semantic components) to decide objectively whether to refer to them as a man, woman, boy or girl. This is the basis of the so-called objectivist or truth-conditional theory of semantics. (Hollman, 2014, p. 526) Therefore, the theory in question will help view the change, which the racially insensitive words have gone through over the curse of several decades; as a result, a detailed analysis of the differences in the linguistic and semantic characteristics of the words, which were and are used as pejorative terms for denoting native Australians. The second theoretical basis, in its turn, can be viewed as an opportunity for embracing not only the linguist ic, but also the social factors into the analysis of the subject of the research, therefore, making a more elaborate commentary on the problem. It will be reasonable, thus, to integrate the social factors into the analysis to see their effect on the linguistic changes. Specifically, the alterations in the connotations of the words, which are used as the tools for insulting the native Australian residents, will be integrated into the study. Research Questions In the course, of the study, the following questions are expected to be answered: What are the key changes that have occurred to the denomination of the native Australians among the rest of the denizens of the Australian population, and what social changes do these linguistic alterations can be the signifiers of? Does the racially insensitive denotation of the native Australians tend to be geared towards the pejoration of the words that used to be the elements of people’s everyday vocabulary, or are these words subject s pecific? What are the key tendencies in the development of the racial slurs used towards the native Australian residents of the North Melbourne community? What principles is the process of creating the racial slurs directed at the native Australians based on and what concepts, both social and vocabulary related ones, is this process founded on? Is there a way to stop the process of the creation of ethnic slurs in the Australia English vocabulary? Methodology The study is going to be carried out as a qualitative research of the subject matter. It should be born in mind, though, that the issue in question is rooted deeply in the historic relationships between the indigenous residents of North Melbourne and the people, whose ancestors migrated to the specified place prior to the development of the conflict. Hence the need to carry out a twofold study emerges. Specifically, the necessity for conducting an analysis of the present-day situation, i.e., the modern attitudes towards native Australians, and the historical premises, which the current situation owes its existence to, must be mentioned. Consequently, it will be reasonable to suggest that the general ethnographic study of the issue should be conducted, with a thorough analysis of the linguistic changes, which the attitude towards the native Australians was manifested with. However, carrying out a historical evaluation of the issue will only bring fruitful results when compared to the implications of a present-day research; herein the significance of another part of the qualitative study, i.e., the evaluation of the modern attitudes towards native Australian, factors. Thus, apart from the general qualitative analysis of the existing historical records of the relationships between the native Australians and the rest of the North Melbourne population, the need for conducting the assessment of the terminology used for addressing native Australians with a negative connotation emerges. The specified study will b e held with the help of questionnaires; distributed among 20 indigenous representatives of the Australian population, the questions will concern two major issues. The first one will address the words that are typically used as a racial slur directed at the people in question and the frequency, with which the slurs in question are addressed to the respondents. Apart from the specified issue, the attitudes towards the racial slurs mentioned above will be evaluated. To be more specific, after the first part of the assessment is over, the pejorative words provided by the research participants will be gathered and analyzed. Afterwards, these words will be incorporated into the next survey, and the respondents will be asked to evaluate the words in question with the help of the Likert scale according to their offensiveness based on the respondents’ subjective estimation. It should be noted that the specified study design contains a range of limitations, the personal experience of t he participants and their objective view of what is offensive and what is not being the key impediments to the objectivity of the study. Indeed, there is no need to stress that the personal impressions of the study participants are far from being trustworthy material to work with. However, the fact that the research will be based on the subjective impressions of the respondents will also have positive effects on the outcomes of the research, as it will provide an inside opinion on the subject matter and, therefore, will help understand the difference in the effect, which racial slurs have on the indigenous population of Australia. Specifically, the changes in the attitudes towards the obscenities that are used regularly, as well as towards the ones that have emerged comparatively recently, will be evaluated. In addition, the analysis of the origin of the words that are used as racial slur addressed towards the native Australians will be carried out, with the subsequent comparison of the linguistic basis for the specified words now and several decades prior. In the course of the first part of the study, personal interviews will be conducted so that the participants could describe the obscenities that they hear most often in an adequate and appropriate manner. As far as the second part of the research, the aforementioned Likert-type scale will be used for the research participants to evaluate the words that they will have mentioned. It is suggested that the ANOVA type of statistical analysis should be used when carrying out the study in question should be used; thus, the results retrieved in the process will be measurable, precise and trustworthy (Perez, 2008, p. 203). It is assumed that the application of the random-effect model will help understand the nature of the changes, which have occurred to the denotation of the native Australian residents, as well as identify the effects, which these alterations in the Australian language and the Australian culture hav e had on the Melbourne society in general and the North Melbourne community in particular. As Perez (2008) stresses, â€Å"The main advantage of the random-effect model, and the reason for including it, is that it allows one to check the main effects of the linguistics acculturation variables, which is not possible with a fixed effects design† (Perez, 2008, p. 202). In other words, the specified model allows for locating the reasons for the words to evolve in a specific direction and be perceived as either offensive or not by the target population (i.e., native Australians). Finally, the further comparison of the words selected by the latter with the ones that will have been found with the help of the general research will be conducted. Ethics Seeing that the study will involve the participation of human subjects, it will be imperative to make sure that informed consent has been obtained from each of them. Therefore, it will be crucial to send the participants-to-be informed consent forms for them to sign; thus, the research will be considered legitimate, and its implications will be viewed as objective and trustworthy. The informed consent forms will be suggested for the participants to sign at the beginning of the research. It should be born in mind, though, that some of the study members may have special abilities and needs. Therefore, the informed consent of their parents, tutors or guardians should be obtained prior to the study. Timeline It is assumed that the research is going to take place in the course of three months. The specified time frame will allow both for gathering the related information carefully and for processing it thoroughly. To be more specific, the research will be carried out in three key stages. First, the information concerning the use of racial slurs directed at the naà ¯ve Australian population in the past will be collected (weeks 1, 2, 3 and 4); then, the questionnaires containing queries concerning the present-day state of affairs regarding the subject matter will be distributed among the target population (weeks 5 and 6). Finally, the third and final stage, which will take roughly two weeks, will incorporate the analysis of the data acquired in the course of the study and the identification of the key research implications. Potential Educational Implications Though the significance of the study in question is far from being global, the issue still can be qualified as rather significant, as it both provides a deep insight on the evolution of the present-day English and allows for locating the key implications of the social moods in the realm of linguistics and language use. In other words, the results of the study can be considered the basis for carrying out another study aimed at analyzing the significance of the factors such as the Australian native words (primarily pre-1870 vocabulary), the use of the stereotypical images associated with Australia and its culture (e.g., a boomerang) for transfor ming them into offensive words (e.g., â€Å"boomerang† – â€Å"boomer,† etc.) on the further evolution of the vocabulary, which is considered offensive for the indigenous Australian people.. More importantly, the study in question sheds some light on the key processes, which the Australian language is undergoing currently in the context of the international conflict, which is about to erupt in Australia. Therefore, the outcomes of this study can be used as the tool for developing suggestions for the further resolution of the conflict. Reference List Australian aboriginals. (2015). The Value of Fiction - The uses of fiction in bringing history to life

The Value of Fiction - The uses of fiction in bringing history to life We history buffs are a rare breed. Happy are the hours we spend poring through pages of dusty old books, wandering through museums full of armor and tapestries, and deciphering forgotten languages in primary sources. Those who have never been bitten by the history bug find it hard to understand what attracts us until they are bitten themselves. There are many different ways history lovers have been drawn into the fascinating world of the past, but perhaps the most common is through a good story. The moment we begin viewing history as stories about real human beings with human motivations instead of mere dates, places and statistics, history can take on a whole new luster. Period literature can help bring the past alive with an epic tale, and so can modern historical fiction. If you are a history buff hoping to get a friend to share your passion for the past, or if you are new to history as a hobby and are trying to understand what others see in it, the best introduction may very well be a historical novel or film. Entertainment has ways of opening the mind to ideas that even the friendliest or most erudite of straight historical texts can never hope to achieve. It helps, of course, when the book is well-written or the film well-directed, and unfortunately historical fiction, just like any other genre, has many more mediocre examples than it does splendid ones. Yet once you find a truly excellent piece of historical fiction, the results can be highly rewarding. However, the trouble with getting your history from fiction is that its, well, fiction. This may seem excruciatingly obvious, but its surprising how many intelligent, educated, well-read individuals take what they read in a historical novel or see in a period film as fact. The Trouble with Fiction When done really well, fiction leaves its audience thinking they know what the medieval world was really like. If the work is accurate, thats wonderful; but alas, novels and films have been known to present a skewed version of events and to perpetuate common misconceptions about the Middle Ages. Of course, most readers realize that much of the dialogue and the private moments of real historical figures that are captured in text or on film are only speculation. They may be aware on some level that events are open to interpretation, and that what they read or see is just one of many versions of what might have happened. Yet even readers who are acutely aware of these facets of historical fiction often ignore any question of accuracy concerning general historical background, settings and costumes, and the details of daily life, accepting as given that this much, at any rate, is authentic. This may be the most dangerous pitfall of using fiction as a doorway to the past. In order to enjoy the experience of fiction, we can (and should) suspend disbelief, and suspend as well any analysis of its veracity as history while reading the story or watching the film. But once you close the book or leave the theater, its time to think again. Even the most carefully-researched historical novel can contain errors of fact, and the sad truth is that many such novels arent carefully researched to begin with. Unlike a historian writing a scholarly treatise, novelists dont have to support every assertion with documentary, archaeological or even secondary evidence in order to get their work published;* they just have to write a good story. And films are so notorious for lacking accuracy that some moviegoers take particular delight in counting the mistakes. Furthermore, scholarly views of the medieval world are constantly evolving; what was considered a fairly accurate picture of the Middle Ages in, for example, the 1970s may be rendered much less authentic by the research and new evidence uncovered in the last few decades. You will sometimes find authors standing on the shoulders of earlier writers and passing along the erroneous or outdated details of their predecessors, with very few readers ever the wiser. Evaluating Fiction Fortunately, historical fiction doesnt always misrepresent the past. There is excellent fiction available, works that bring the Middle Ages to life in a wealth of accurate detail (and tell a good story, too). And more and more, modern historical novelists are making serious efforts to provide an accurate version of medieval times. But how do you know how much of whats presented in fiction is true to life? Do you take the word of the blurb on the back cover? Can film reviewers really tell you when a picture of the past is realistic? Theres only one way to know for sure: find out for yourself. Pick up a factual history book, visit some websites, go to a museum, join a discussion list, and start your journey into the fascinating world of historical discovery. If fiction is the trigger that launches you into the past, its value cannot be denied. Review a Medieval NovelShare your thoughts on a medieval-set historical novel good or bad at this review page. Note *Unfortunately, the same could be said of much popular history that gets published, as well. Guide Note: This feature was originally posted in May of 2000, and was updated in August of 2010.

Cracking the Alumni Magazine Market

Cracking the Alumni Magazine Market Cracking the Alumni Magazine Market  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚      In December, 1996, my wife Tina was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had her last radiation treatment in August, 1997. (Shes doing fine today.) I wrote a piece about the experience (David, I Have a Lump: Breast Cancer, One Husbands Story) and sent it off to several womens magazines. No magazines bit, although one person responded that while she loved the piece it didnt meet their current requirements. That was a kind way of saying that it didn’t fit in a magazine filled with such lofty pieces as Ten Ways to Please Your Man and How to Lose 25 Pounds in Two Weeks.  A few years later, I decided to tackle the alumni magazine market. (My career to that point had focused on writing admissions and fund-raising materials for colleges and schools.) Id always admired CC, the alumni magazine of Tinas alma mater Connecticut College, so I wrote to the editor, complimenting her on the magazine, expressing my intention to write for the magazine and including the cancer piece as a sample o f my work. She immediately offered to buy the piece, and it was published in 2001.  Since that time, Ive written over 50 articles and profiles for about 15 alumni magazines.   A cover article about one woman led to a deep friendship and to my writing her

Should overweight passengers be charged for two seats when flying Essay

Should overweight passengers be charged for two seats when flying - Essay Example This is already happening in the United States. The argument is raised since this is discrimination against passengers with obesity. To be charged by the kilo is quite embarrassing for somebody with twenty kilograms above the limit. If an individual is 20kg above the limit and is a regular flyer, they will actually suffer both emotionally and financially. Having to meet the fat tax expenses will be rather embarrassing (Sullivan 6). The majority of obesity and health organizations are supporting this suggestion claiming that it is only fair since the airline will need to carry extra weight. A number of airlines as an alternative make passengers who can not fit into one seat pay for two seats, for twice the cost of the journey (Appleton). Those who require extra seatbelt extension will have to buy a new an update or purchase an extra seat. America has for a long time taxed and charged to discourage some manners. Taxes in cigarettes are increasing, taxes in liquor are rising in various states, seatbelts are now mandatory by law and some particular areas are currently charging obese workers more for health insurance. For better or worse, the tendency to transform behavior through economics is upon us. As medical expenses rises the debate over charging for obesity is indeed only going to grow. Airlines are too increasingly subject to customer grievances and even losing court cases over travelers being injured by fellow obese passengers. Using two seats uses twice the fuel. This actually sounds nice even though this may not be true. The space which a passenger takes does not affect the amount of fuel used but the weight may affect (Appleton). It sounds good even if it is not actually true. The space you take does not impact on fuel, the weight does. The question arises as to whether a weight lifter weighing more and has more mass of muscles must also be charged more. This could be just a technique used by the airlines to get more money from the passengers. There are writings seen in one of the American airlines. It said something to the effect that if you can not fit into the seat, you will have to pay for a second seat and that if the seats are not fully occupied; you will only pay a child's fare on the second seat (Kate) There are some necessities regarding the seat being a window seat or something of that sort. The airlines prerequisite is that if an individual can not fit in the seat without hanging over the arm rest then he will be charged twice and it sounded like a fair rule. The airline companies should come up with a practical means of determining who is overweight and who is not. It is even better to argue that an individual is overweight due to medical reasons other than the notion that one is lazy and overweight. The airlines must not be forced to give an individual a free extra seat since he or she can not fit in one. The person has to pay for his or her seat, likewise to overweight individuals. That is prejudice and another effort by the airlines to make more money. The airline seats are actually too small period. Tall individuals, overweight individuals and skinny individuals are all not comfortable in a flight. The airlines in their effort once more to make more money squeezed in as many seats as possible at the expense of comfort of passengers. People complain that they don not want to sit next to an overweight passenger as a trick to get bumped

Conflict, Decision Making, and Organizational Design Essay

Conflict, Decision Making, and Organizational Design - Essay Example On the other hand, professional differences, which entail approach to assignments, skills and knowledge, also lead to conflicts, especially when an assignment is handled by a team. In the current world, various technological developments have led to more efficiency in the conduction of various assignments. As such, when two people conduct the same assignment using varying technologies, conflicts usually arise. Moreover, as businesses develop, there is usually the necessity of mergers or recruitment of new professionals, which may lead to the rise of conflicts. Despite the presence of such conflicts, many people usually find themselves in unhealthy conflicts, which usually poison the work environment. As such, it is necessary for employees, and management to understand the best way to solve such conflicts when they arise. This paper seeks to give an in-depth evaluation of the negotiation strategies used to address various workplace conflicts. Additionally, how evidence-based managemen t could be applied to the work environment, blocks, stages, and methods of creative decision making to determine the best approach T-Mobile should follow when making managerial decisions, and the environmental and strategic factors that affect the organizational design of T-Mobile will be evaluated. How I could apply negotiation strategies to address potential conflicts in the workplace. Negotiations are very essential in coming up with the best solution for different engagements in the workplace. In most cases, negotiations are unavoidable and thus being knowledgeable on the best negotiation strategies is essential. Negotiation involves various stages, which include preparation, dialogue, clarification of goals, negotiating towards a win-win situation, agreement and implementing the solution realized. Since conflicts also occur in my workplace as a customer service professional for T-Mobile, a clear understanding of how to handle conflicts as they arise and avoid poisoning of the w ork environment is necessary. Therefore, an understanding of factors such as technological developments, culture, age, personality, professional differences among others will help in taking the best approach in handling conflicts by making good negotiations. In this case, getting a clear overview of the underpinning factors leading to such differences is essential. In most cases, when conflicts arise, people usually make personal judgments, which in some cases do not solve the conflicts as anticipated. As such, having been well informed on how conflicts arise, I will always withhold judgment and use efficient problem solving techniques to ensure that the problem is solved completely, and that future occurrences of such conflicts are effectively handled. I will never ignore any conflict that arises as they usually arise out of something. In this regard, I will always utilize the structures implemented by T-Mobile to effectively handle the conflicts. Additionally, I will be very obser vant on how I handle every person or situations to avoid being at the centre of any conflicts. This is because, despite an act being minute, it can have adverse effects, which are beyond the expectations of many. Thus being extra cautious will help a great deal in avoiding occurrences of conflicts in future. Sharpening my negotiation skills and conflict management skills will be very effective in handling confl

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Essay Example for Free

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Essay Whether or not there is a doomed afterlife in which is called â€Å"hell†, everybody has their own perception of what their â€Å"hell† would be like. Rather your view of hell is eternal detonation or a place consisting of deathly flames and Satan’s head down in a bucket of ice, most people do not wish to be summoned into the depths of hell. However; Jonathon Edward’s sermon, â€Å"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,† portrays briefly the vivid imagery of how hell was represented during the Second Great Awakening. In addition, Edwards aim was to teach his listeners about the horror of hell. Thus, Edwards’s dramatic interpretation of hell frightened the people who followed by God’s word and urges those who don’t to call upon Christ to receive forgiveness. Jonathon Edward’s briefly described hell in his sermon. His justification regarding hell was a â€Å"lake of burning brimstone,† (Edwards 98). Edward’s Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, emphasized the belief that hell is real and he did not tolerate the voices of opposing opinions, urging that they had a â€Å"black cloud of God’s wrath now hanging directly over your heads†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Edwards 98). Edwards anticipated that the imagery and the message contained in his sermon would instill the reality of being doomed into hell if they did not take the step into following Christ. Therefore, the preaching’s made by Edwards were not sympathetic toward the nonbelievers, and infused the believers with terror of being summoned to hell. There is nothing that keeps wicked men at any one moment out of Hell, but the mere pleasure of God (Edward 100). Edward’s words represented God’s power in being able to cast wicked people in hell at any moment. The people sitting in the pews of the Church were most likely coped with fear as a result of Edward’s harsh speech. He further warns the people of the only thing keeping them from hell is the thin air which God creates as a barrier. According to Edward’s, God would have no pity for those people casted into hell since he provided humans with a chance to resolve their sins. Since the sermon of Edwards was conducted during the Second Great Awakening when people were regaining their religion, people would most likely be on edge from the words of Jonathon Edwards. In summation, the brief representation of hell from Edwards commended God’s lack of sympathy for those people who did not abide by God’s words and instilled fear in the hearts of people who attended Church. Accordingly, Edwards’s remarkable explanation of hell frightened the people who pursued in God’s word and recommend those who didn’t to follow Christ in order to receive forgiveness. Edwards, in addition assisted in teaching his community the horrors and lifelong detonation of hell. Therefore, in Jonathon Edward’s sermon, â€Å"Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,† his brief but vivid descriptions of how hell was characterized gave the era of the Second Great Awakening great fear if they did not chose to obey by Christ. He wanted to preach to the people about the lasting effects not obeying by God had. Thus, Jonathon Edwards approached the people of his teachings with fear of hell and the representation he had of hell.

The Legend of The Scottish Play :: Urban Legends

The Legend of "The Scottish Play" 1) Background I interviewed a freshman theater major at the University on the topic of urban legends. The interview was conducted in my dormitory room. The nineteen-year-old female college student is originally from Delaware, and her parents are both real estate appraisers. When inquired about urban legends, she recalled the theater lore and superstitions that she knew intimately as an actress. The interviewee was particularly eager to talk about the curse associated with Macbeth, the Scottish Play. 2) Transcription of the Legend of the Scottish Play Macbeth! That’s not a superstition! That’s truth and fact! [gestures emphatically with fist] If you do Macbeth, something bad will happen; if you say, â€Å"Macbeth† in the theater, something bad will happen. I have true stories to testify to that one. Let’s see, umm what show were we doing?... Our Town, we were doing Our Town. And there are [clears throat] people in my school like to mess with people like me who believe in the Macbeth superstition, and so they’ll go into the theater and they’ll just go, â€Å"MACBETH!† and I will freak out and I tell them to go outside and spin around three times and spit over their left shoulder, because that’s the [antidote]. But they don’t, because they’re trying to mess with me, and something bad always happens. So when we’re doing Macbeth, this kid, who is one of the stage managers, I wasn’t there when it happened so I couldn’t make him go outside, but my director told me that he said, â€Å"Macbeth,† in the theatre, and so I was like freaking out and everyone was like, â€Å"don’t freak out, it’s not a big deal,† but it was, because our curtain broke. That day. Later that day, the curtain broke. It was two days before the show. Yeah. His fault. Another example. We were doing Romeo and Juliet and okay, now I know this is not an accident, but it doesn’t matter. Still, somebody said â€Å"Macbeth† in the theatre, and I told them to go outside and spin around but they didn’t do it, and then somebody stole all my costumes, and I was Juliet so it was kind of a big deal and kind of bad. It came from, because the um, the spells that are said

Market Development

In this report I will be analysing and comparing the marketing techniques used by ASDA and Cancer Research UK taking into account the similarities and differences between them and how they contribute to the company’s success. Igor Ansoff developed a description of the strategies available for growing in a business in 1957. He have identified for categories for the growth of the business these are Market Penetration, Market Development, Product development and Diversification. Ansoff used these four categories in a matrix to show how the opportunities differ in term of new and existing products and markets. Marketing Techniques used by ASDA Market Penetration What is Market Penetration? Market Penetration is when increasing market share of an existing product, or promoting a new product, through strategies such as bundling, extensive advertising, lower prices, or volume discounts. ASDA uses TV adverts to advertise their product. Advertising on TV will catch the interest of their customers as it will have sound and colour. They also use their own website to advertise. By having a website it will allow their customers to see what products they have with prices and also to shop online. They also let their customer know what product they have and also to promote by giving out leaflets. To make sure that their new products are trustworthy ASDA will have samples for their customers to try. ASDA will advertise their business by using newspapers and Billboards. ASDA should advertise as much as possible for the business to run for a long term. They also make sure that they are presenting their brands well from till receipts, plastic bags and staff uniform. Cancer Research sells its existing products into existing markets by advertising their new campaigns such â€Å"Race for Life†. The charity advertises their campaigns on TV’s, Newspapers, Leaflets, Charity shops, posters, billboards on busses and using their own website. Cancer research uses these methods of advertising to increase the awareness and encourage people to donate. Tesco have supported Race For Life for ten years, which has contributed to Cancer Research UK raising over ? 62m for the fight against cancer sine the series began in 1994. Tesco now is working in partnership with Cancer Research to recruit 1 million women and raise ? 80million to fund life-saving work. Market Development What is Market Development? Market Development is a marketing technique aimed at increasing a company’s market in order to widen the customer base for the pur pose of selling more products. ASDA is continuing to open new stores in UK. They are now planning to open ASDA in Tottenham High Street. Opening new stores gives the idea of them doing really well in the business and is meeting the needs of their customers. They also advertise themselves online and in the store. However, they can use different languages on website for the people who are not able to understand English. As there are different ethnic backgrounds in UK, Cancer research should have different languages available in their website. This will allow them to attract more people to the charity from different ethnics. Cancer research can also operate overseas such as Europe. This will help to

Health Information Essay

Not only is that important it also needs to be accurate and reliable medical information. All of the above information is not only very important it also impacts the HIPAA privacy rule. The Office for Civil Rights is responsible with its enforcement of the HIPPA Privacy Rule. Not only does it need to be enforced it needs to be constantly upheld at all times. This is necessary to protect both the patient and the medical professionals from unauthorized use of their health records and to allow medical providers access to secure, safe, accurate, and reliable medical information. The demand for information has risen from not only third party payers but in fact has risen from governmental entities. Patients now have to consent in order to accept health care treatment. As a result from the demand for patient information has brought forth a huge development between the law and medicine. There’s also the term informed consent. This is used in law to indicate that the consent a patient gives falls under certain minimum standards. Any informed consent can be said to have been given based upon a clear appreciation and understanding of the facts, implications, and future consequences of an action. Any patient who is concerned must have adequate reasoning faculties and must be in possession of all relevant facts at the time the consent was given. Both of these are needed in order to give an informed consent. To understand the responsibilities that confidentiality and informed consent place on health-care providers, The United States Congress created the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in 1996. This act provides protection of health care coverage for workers, and also protects the privacy and security of medical information. The HIPAA laws allow authorized medical professionals or healthcare organizations to have access to your private medical records. Anything a doctor, nurse or other health professional has written or discussed about your personal medical treatment is confidential. Medical data that is being held by your health insurance company is also kept confidential and also any billing information which is submitted by patients or a medical facility or your health insurance company. HIPAA restricts who can and can’t request access to patient medical information. It is very important that your medical provider have access to all of your health history. There are entities that can access your medical information without your written consent such as: employers, workers compensation are all exempt. School districts, state agencies, and law enforcement agencies or institutions are exempt from HIPAA laws and are not required to follow the privacy and security rules. It is very important that you fully understand your HIPAA rights before anyone consents to release any medical information to organizations that are not required to follow the privacy and security rules HIPPA has put in place to protect confidential information. ROI policies and processes need to be adaptive. The process should be changed to meet new regulatory requirements and technology. Changes to the HIPAA rules regarding the accounting of health information disclosures expected this year have the potential to dramatically expand HIM and ROI responsibilities and pose operable disputes. Health information exchanges are pushing the frequency and scope of how patient information gets transferred. All HIM professionals must continue to remain aware and on top of all changes to ensure HIPAA compliance and change processes accordingly. The HIPAA privacy rule has received both positive and negative effects on the release of patient information by healthcare facilities. The intention of HIPAA was to protect patient privacy and to promote security and confidentiality of all patient information; it has had some unintended consequences for facilities. Some of these unintended effects, discovered about some issues directly related to the release of patient information which has had an impact with the implementation of HIPAA. The biggest issues that were found were. Increases in the public’s misunderstanding about release of patient information, lack of an umbrella policy, regulation defining infractions, enforcement that allows individual institutions to make their own version, and challenges to health information management professionals in controlling safeguards related to release of information given the transition to electronic health records and the increased involvement of information technology. The findings from this research suggest there is a need for additional clarification of the regulations that are governing HIPAA, and its standardized instructions and extensive training of its healthcare workers. I have learned so much about how the release of information impacts the HIPPA Privacy Rule. I do believe the most impact comes from the public because most people don’t understand new health care practices such as: record keeping, obtaining verbal or written consent.

Medusa’s Myth Long ago, on the island of Guana, there lived two elderly Gods, Phorcys and his wife Ceto. For a long time they had been waiting for a child. Finally, to there delight, Ceto gave birth to not just one, but three beautiful daughters named Stheno, Eurwale, and Medusa. The daughters where so beautiful that they could attract any and every man they saw. Although this was a very useful factor, it also had its downsides. Myths About Obama - The 5 Wackiest Myths About Obama

Myths About Obama - The 5 Wackiest Myths About Obama If you believe everything you read in your email inbox, Barack Obama is a Muslim born in Kenya who is ineligible to serve as U.S. president and he even charters private jets at taxpayer expense so the family dog Bo can go on vacation in luxury. And then there is the truth. No other modern president, it seems, has been the subject of so many outrageous and malicious fabrications. The myths about Obama live on through the years, mostly in chain emails forwarded endlessly across the Internet, despite being debunked over and over again. Here is a look at five of the silliest myths about Obama: 1. Obama is Muslim. False. He is a Christian. Obama was baptized at Chicagos Trinity United Church of Christ in 1988. And he has spoken and written often about his faith in Christ. Rich, poor, sinner, saved, you needed to embrace Christ precisely because you had sins to wash away - because you were human, he wrote in his memoir, The Audacity of Hope. ... Kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt Gods spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth, Obama wrote. And yet nearly one in five Americans - 18 percent - believe Obama is a Muslim, according to an August 2010 survey conducted by The Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. The are wrong. 2. Obama Nixes National Day of Prayer Numerous widely circulated emails claim President Barack Obama refused to recognize the National Day of Prayer after taking office in January of 2009. Oh Our wonderful president is at it again .... he has cancelled the national day of prayer that is held at the white house every year .... sure glad I wasnt fooled into voting for him! one email begins. Thats false. Obama issued proclamations setting the National Day of Prayer in both 2009 and 2010. We are blessed to live in a Nation that counts freedom of conscience and free exercise of religion among its most fundamental principles, thereby ensuring that all people of goodwill may hold and practice their beliefs according to the dictates of their consciences, Obamas April 2010 proclamation read. Prayer has been a sustaining way for many Americans of diverse faiths to express their most cherished beliefs, and thus we have long deemed it fitting and proper to publicly recognize the importance of prayer on this day across the Nation. 3. Obama Uses Taxpayer Money to Fund Abortions Critics claim that the health care reform law of 2010, or Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, includes provisions that make up the broadest expansion of legalized abortion since Roe v. Wade. The Obama Administration will give Pennsylvania $160 million in federal tax funds, which weve discovered will pay for insurance plans that cover any legal abortion, Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee, said in a widely circulated statement in July 2010. Wrong again. The Pennsylvania Insurance Department, responding to claims that federal money would fund abortions, issued a stern rebuttal to anti-abortion groups.Pennsylvania will - and has always intended to - comply with the federal ban on abortion funding in the coverage provided through our federally funded high risk pool, the Insurance Department said in a statement. In fact, Obama signed an executive order banning the use of federal money to pay for abortion in the health care reform law on March 24, 2010. If the state and federal governments stick to their words, it does not appear taxpayer money will pay any part of abortions in Pennsylvania or any other state. 4. Obama Was Born in Kenya Numerous conspiracy theories claim that Obama was born in Kenya and not Hawaii, and that because he was not born here he was not eligible to serve as president. The silly rumors grew so loud, however, that Obama released a copy of his certificate of live birth during the presidential campaign in 2007. Smears claiming Barack Obama doesnt have a birth certificate arent actually about that piece of paper - theyre about manipulating people into thinking Barack is not an American citizen, the campaign said. The truth is, Barack Obama was born in the state of Hawaii in 1961, a native citizen of the United States of America. The documents prove he was born in Hawaii. Though some believe the records are phony. 5. Obama Charters Plane for the Family Dog Uh, no. PolitiFact.com, a service of the St. Petersburg Times in Florida, managed to track down the source of this ridiculous myth to a vaguely worded newspaper article in Maine about the first familys vacation in the summer of 2010. The article, about the Obamas visiting Acadia National Park, reported: Arriving in a small jet before the Obamas was the first dog, Bo, a Portuguese water dog given as a present by the late U.S. Sen Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., and the presidents personal aide Reggie Love, who chatted with Baldacci. Some folks, eager to jump on the president, mistakenly believed that meant the dog got its own personal jet. Yeah, really. As the rest of us toil on the unemployment line, as millions of Americans find their retirement accounts dwindling, their hours at work cut, and their pay scale trimmed, King Barack and Queen Michelle are flying their little doggie, Bo, on his own special jet airplane for his own little vacation adventure, one blogger wrote. The truth? The Obamas and their staffer traveled in two small planes because the runway where they landed was too short to accommodate Air Force One. So one plane carried the family. The other carried the Bo the dog - and lots of other people. The dog did not have its own private jet.

Recommendation to an ivoirian scholar Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Recommendation to an ivoirian scholar - Essay Example In addition, in America, it is not common for people to just show up at another person’s home unless the latter person has invited them. It is instead customary for them to call beforehand and ask whether the person they intend to visit is either free or not. In addition, it is often necessary for the person visiting the United States to be aware that the family relationships in this country are not often the same as in other parts of the world. This is because while in other countries, it is normal for a family to have a mother, a father, and numerous children; this is often not the case in the United States. It is not uncommon to find single-parent families or individuals who have been married and divorced several times (Goransson 903). However, the American way of life is extremely liberal and this will likely ensure that one has a most pleasant visit. Among the most prevalent obstacles to research in the United States is the fact that there tends to be a lack of adequate f unding for the researcher. This is because for a researcher from outside the country, it is not easy to acquire the funding that one needs unless the said researcher has his or her own funding (Brew 423). It is also a time consuming process for the researcher to obtain permission from the authorities to conduct their research, and even if the researcher does get permission, it is often difficult for him to conduct their research in a manner which is familiar to them. One of the biggest obstacles in conducting research in the United States is the fact that the researcher might not have enough knowledge about scientific methods of research which might end up compromising the research that he intends to conducts (Thompson, Ritenbaugh, and Nichter 112). When conducting research in the United States, the researcher should ensure that all their personal issues that might end up compromising their research are dealt with before the beginning of the research process and this will help the r esearcher to give their full attention to the work at hand hence lending legitimacy and credibility to their research work.2 The official language of the United States is English and being aware that this language might not be the first language of the researcher, it would be best if he was made aware of it so that he can start acquainting himself with it (Collins 146). It may be extremely difficult for an anthropological researcher to conduct his research in country whose official language is unknown to them. It is a fact that the language barrier tends to make a lot of the researchers uncomfortable in their new environment and this would be a great hindrance for them in their research because they do not have the capacity to understand the meanings behind the actions of their research subjects.3 In fact, the language barrier may make the anthropological researcher feel isolated, especially in cases where there are no others from their home countries nearby with whom they can assoc iate. The researcher might end up taking a lot of time and hard work to get to be familiar with the local language so that they might get to conduct their research efficiently. Most researchers who tend to go to other countries tend to forget that

Does the Second Admendment need alteration Research Paper

Does the Second Admendment need alteration - Research Paper Example In spite of their effectiveness, these documents have numerous flaws. The second amendment and its ensuing argument, is an example of a flaw, divides the country into two distinct camps (Carlson 2). This essay will advocate for repeal of the law to state that each household should have a firearm. Carlson asserts that the right for individuals in the U.S to bear arms has been the been the focus of various political debates (2). The debates revolve around the infringement of gun ownership by the U.S government. By restricting the possession of firearms, will the government be servicing its own selfish interests or is it simply being mindful about its citizen’s welfare. Do the government and its bodies, such as the senate, have the right to re-interpret this law to fit modern times (Gerber 4). This is considering the difference in time from when the law was first enacted. Another question regards the effects that would arise from this re-interpretation. Would this new and modified law help U.S. citizens or simply worsen the current situation? The crime rates in the U.S. are not dropping anytime soon, and the right to bear arms is not a cause of this trend (Charles 13). The individuals who bear arms are not the perpetrators of crime. The thieves, murderers and other villains possess their firearms illegally. For this reason, should the government concentrate on the second amendment or the laws on purchasing? In my opinion, the latter needs to be stricter to curb the prevalence of crime perpetrated by illegal firearms. The aforementioned fact of illegal firearms perpetrating crimes leads to the central argument of this essay. Charles continues to state that it should be universally established that families should be inherently granted the right to bear arms (14). Bearing arms assists families in protecting themselves from rapists, thieves and other thugs that

Comparing of two corpora from a linguistic journal and a transcribed Essay

Comparing of two corpora from a linguistic journal and a transcribed interview - Essay Example This study compared two differing corpora, each 300 words in length, for four different linguistic variables. The corpora were extracted from a linguistic journal and a transcribed interview and the linguistic variables were number of sentences, average length of sentences, number and type of dependent clauses and number of contractions. Results supported Hypotheses 1 and 4, wherein more and shorter sentences and more contractions were found in the transcribed interview corpus than in the linguistic journal extract. The findings did not support Hypothesis 2 because even though the linguistic extract provided less and longer sentences it was the interview extract that provided more dependent clauses within the 300 words. Hypothesis 3 was only partly supported because the linguistic journal corpus did not provide evidence of more dependent noun clauses than other types of dependent clauses.

Lloyds TSB Objectives: Developing a good customer relationship between the customers. Increase customer service in order to meet customer needs. Lloyds TSB Strategies in year 2005: Strategy is a broad based formula for how business is going to compete, what its goals should be and what polices will be needed to carry out those goals. The essence of formulating competitive strategy is relating a company to its environment. In 2003 they developed customer relationship programmes to deliver higher revenues per customer in the retail market and according to their press releases this strategy seems to be working Our customer satisfaction scores hit record highs in 2005, again reflecting the improvement programmes established over the last couple of years, and we will continue to drive further improvements as we seek to differentiate our service performance against that of our Competitors.  [1]   Lloyds TSB say they are committed to achieving top performance in both effectiveness and efficiency. Effectiveness is the ability to recruit, develop and retain loyal customers who think of us first for their next financial services need. Efficiency is the ability to provide service and sales at a lower cost so that we can give our customers better value. We believe that in order to achieve our goal we must be customer rather than product centric.  [2]   Target customer current account recruitment increased by 28 per cent, compared with 2004.  [3]   Producing new offers to the customers. Providing new services and adding quality to the existing products. In order to compete with the existing competitors Lloyds TSB providing internet banking service in order to become a high performance organisation Lloyds TSB uses Flawless execution that mainly develops relationships with customers. Identifying the customer needs and solving their problems by using advanced technologies. Critical Evaluation Strategic Analysis: Melville, N. et al. (2004) defined the value of information technology in the organizations as the organizational performance impacts of information technology at both the intermediate process level and the organization-wide level, and comprising both efficiency impacts and competitive impacts. If the information technology has been utilized efficiently. It will add value to the organization itself. Brooks, B (2003) suggested that adding value to the business meant extending the ranger of products; reducing the cost; improving the quality of the services and products and so on. There are a lot of ways for the organizations to choose to add value for themselves; but it seems that IT strategy has been widely used in the modern business environment. The strategy plan established for Lloyds TSB has been created after undertaking a through serious issues about the business and the environmental. The strategic plan that implemented by the organisation can move forward with a sense of direction, purpose and urgency. The strategic plan implemented by the TSB exists to achieve some degree of sustainable competitive advantage. Strategic planning as suggested by (Robson 1997) highlights that strategic planning turns a organisations vision into concrete achievable. It describes the initiatives that will achieve the vision in ways deemed consistent with the organisation, its assumed market and the competitive environment. Strategy plan plays an important in developing the organisation and also it involve in the creation of new and lasting competitive advantages and the development of new products and services. It is important whilst strategy making that innovation and dynamism is concurrently endeavoured for as suggested by (Porter 1987) The strategy plan Lloyds TSB is to achieve their vision followed by their mission and goals. The goals specifies how the organisation will get back in to the market leadership. The vision of the organisation will improve the innovation and dynamic approaches towards the market. All the strategies that are implemented by the Lloyds TSB are to tackle the complex situations. How ever all these strategies that developed by the Lloyds TSB are to remain the competition in the financial market. Inbound logistics : The inbound logistics specify the building area, where the business going to start? what are the safety measures we have to take? What is cost of the area we selected? These all come under Inbound Logistics. Operations: The banking sector has to do much part with the operations. Information system is highly used in the operation part. It also give incurrence like mobile incurrence, car break down etc. Porters Five Force Model Analysis of Lloyds TSB with Porters 5 force Model : Threat of New Entrants: Orders from the Government (Financial Services Authority The British Bankers Association) The organisations that which invest high capital investment, are some of the threats When the market is good then there is a possible to enter the new entrants . As can be seen above, the entry barriers in place for the financial services industry are low. When entry barriers are low, new firms can freely enter the industry, which increase rivalry and depletes profits as suggested by (Robson, 1997) Bargaining Power of Customer: Missing the customer relationship. (Customers are seen to bank with several banks, hold different financial products with different financial service providers.) Customers can change their account depending on the banks what they offer interest rate. (Customers are no longer tied into accounts or agreements for a long period of time) Maximum of the customers are very Money minded. (This is through the availability of interest free credit cards/reduced rate loans/competitive savings rates) The Customers can easily get the account details and the bank statements (Information technology has enabled this; loan rates/ credit cards can be searched and compared online offering the best product to the customer with little effort) Customers want to get more service from the bank. Bargaining Power of Supplier: The interest rate is announced by the Bank Of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) present moment the interest rates are on hold at 4%. The final rate influence financial services products. Substitute Products: We see Product differential is every where in the financial services industry Examples of product differentiated can be seen below: Increased number of Credit Unions in the form of credit cards/store cards. An example is here, Marks Spencer who now offer a store card and a credit card to customers along with reduced personal loan rate. The above model, as suggested by (Porter, 1985) largely determined the type and level of competition within the financial services industry. Analysis of Lloyds TSB with SWOT analysis : A SWOT analysis is used to analysis the internal and external environments of the organisation. In case of Lloyds TSB. Com. We can identify the Lloyds TSB strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It is suggested by (Harrison, St John 1998) that the results from this situation analysis may form the basis for developing missions, goals and strategies. Figure below highlights the SWOT Matrix SWOT Analysis Internal Factors Strengths Opportunities Weaknesses Opportunities Weaknesses Strengths Threats Threats External Factors Figure SWOT Matrix Strengths: Lloyds TSB is the Europes 4th largest retail bank Lloyds TSB is Britains 8th largest banking sector based on market capitalisation Lloyds TSB has very strong branch network of 2300 Lloyds TSB had more than 16 million customers Lloyds TSB has good brand recognition Lloyds TSB will Provide Mortgages, Insurances, investments and it provides a full range of financial service Lloyds TSB will Provide a full functional internet banking for both personal customers and business customers Lloyds TSB will update the customers with new schemes through :telephony/internet Lloyds TSB New changes has been made in the online banking, that as been expected by customers rapidly. Opportunities: We can increase the online banking customers We can increase the number of premier customers By increasing the amount of wholesale market Increasing the brand recognition . Managing more number of customers in the financial affairs Cross sell (As a range of products exist therefore take advantage of the strong brand name) Example: Foreign Currency combination with Travel Insurance Mortgages combination with Life Insurance Home Insurance combination with Home Utilities Weaknesses: Not maintaining stable Interest rates/this is due to inflation base rate Cross publicity related to the Scottish Widows(Part of LTSB) Policys Due to problems in security, privacy and reliability the internet banking updates every time. Threats: Entering the new banks specifying only internet banking(unconventional banks) The new retail marketing industries have entering in to the banking sector such as Sainsburys supermarket, Marks Spencer, Tesco Supermarket. Missing the customer loyalty Financial banking sector industry is too slow down for the next two years, this will have effect on Lloyds TSB The significance of the SWOT analysis undertaken above is to use the existing business strengths to exploit opportunities, to create new opportunities, to counteract threats and repair any weaknesses as suggested by (Robson 1997) CONCLUSION A management information system is a system or process that provides the information necessary to manage an organization effectively(Richard 1895). This eassy discuses all the activities that the Management Information System perform in our selected organization Lloyds TSB Bank. SUGGESTION Lloyds TSB is using the Information System very efficiently and increasing , but still there are many things that should be improved. With increase of technology, the bank should update the IS up-to-date for providing best services to the customer.. In the Online banking system security should be increased.
